EA has not announced its next-gen plans for Apex Legends but one figures the popular battle royale game will make the leap to PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Electronic Arts hasn’t officially confirmed whether or not Apex Legends will be coming to next-gen consoles, but one figures the publisher’s popular and lucrative battle royale will make the leap at some point. The question is when?

Truth be told, we don’t really know right now. Apex Legends originally launched for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in February 2019. Its release was unconventional for EA  in that it was not only free-to-play, but also done without out much pre-launch fanfare. It’s like the game was announced and then released simultaneously on the same day without all of the usual advanced marketing and PR hype.

It’s doubtful that will be the case for Apex Legends now as the game has become a massive hit. But it’s also weird that EA hasn’t really announced any timeframe as to when it could arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

EA did state back in October 2019’s earnings call that Apex Legends is a “major long-term franchise” for them and that they’ve got a long pipeline of content planned for the future. One would assume this includes bringing it to PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Of course, with both consoles already supporting backwards compatibility, perhaps there’s a chance a specific next-gen version won’t be released. Maybe it will remain as is, but playable on new consoles with cross-platform play enabled. It’s also worth noting that a job posting spotted nearly six months ago called for Senior Rendering Engineers to “push next-gen platforms and the PC to their limits on Apex Legends.”

EA has an earnings call on Thursday, November 5, so it’s entirely possible that Apex Legends’ next-gen plans will be laid out then. Or we’ll at least have confirmation as to whether or not a specific next-gen version is planned or if we’ll just have to settle for backwards compatibility. Interestingly, Apex Legends game director Chad Grenier also hinted at the possibility of expanding Apex Legends beyond its battle royale roots.

Meanwhile, Fortnite, the biggest battle royale game on the scene, has already been confirmed as a launch title for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. The game will also see various visual and gameplay enhancements made possible by the improved system technology.
