Genshin Impact: How to unlock co-op multiplayer to play with friends
You don’t have to travel the open world of Genshin Impact alone. Here’s how to unlock multiplayer.
Genshin Impact is the new free-to-play action role-playing game from miHoYo. Jumping into the game, you will immediately notice a vast, fantasy world ripe for exploration. And while it may seem like this at first, you don’t actually have to do it alone.
Genshin Impact does feature co-op multiplayer gameplay but you aren’t able to access it right away. It’s also somewhat limited in what you can do.
How to unlock multiplayer
To unlock the multiplayer feature in Genshin Impact you need to reach Adventure Rank 16. Additionally, any friend you hope to invite also has to have reached Adventure Rank 16.
Adventure Rank is not the same as your Character Level. While you can raise your Character Level by fighting enemies and using consumables like Traveler’s Experience, Adventurer’s Experience and Hero’s Experience, raising your Adventure Rank can only be done by playing the game.
How to raise your Adventure Rank
Simply playing the game and exploring the world will help increase your Adventure Rank. Defeating enemies and bosses, discovering new warp points and Statues of The Seven, opening Chests, completing challenges, opening Lay Line Flowers and guiding Seelies to their resting place all contribute to your Adventure Rank.
However, the quickest way to increase your Adventure Rank is to complete quests. Completing the main story quests in the prologue (the Archon Quests) provides a good amount Adventure Rank experience. Early on in the game, you’ll receive the Adventurer Handbook. This book contains various objectives that you can complete as you play the game, such as activating three Teleport Waypoints, opening chests and visiting Statues of The Seven.
The objectives in your Adventure Handbook are broken up into Chapters. In addition to the individual experience that you get for completing each achievement, you also get a bonus for finishing an entire Chapter. The good thing is that the achievements in later chapters count retroactively. So if you’ve done something that counts towards Chapter 2 before reaching it, you’ll still get credit towards it when you do eventually unlock it. At Adventure Rank 12, you’ll unlock daily missions, which provide another source of Adventure experience.

Once you and your friends all hit Adventure Rank 16, you can begin playing together. Although you can have up to 45 friends in Genshin Impact, you can only play with three of them at a time (a party of four).
It’s worth noting that co-op play in Genshin Impact is somewhat limited in what you can do together. For starters, only the host can open Treasure Chests and interact with NPCs. Also, story mission progression only counts for the host.
Basically, when laying multiplayer, you’re limited to completing dungeons and daily random quests, defeating enemies and world bosses, and simply exploring. There’s also no PvP in the game as of right now. It’s possible Genshin Impact will expand upon its multiplayer offerings but for now this is it.
