Joe Biden, Kamala Harris launch campaign in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris hope to reach gamers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons with political decorations.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a game that doesn’t tend to get into the topic of politics. With the election only about two months away, Democrat Presidential candidate Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris decided to take a very interesting approach to their political campaign.
A recent announcement stated that the Biden-Harris campaign have released four in-game signs that players can use to decorate their island. The four signs consist of the official Biden-Harris logo, the Team Joe logo, the “Joe” Pride logo, and an image of aviator sunglasses shaded in red, white, and blue. Players are able to decorate the islands with these signs if they choose to, starting on September 1st. If you are someone who would like to access these signs, there are QR codes that are available to be scanned through the Nintendo Switch Online App.
This is a very interesting approach that the Biden-Harris campaign is making as it is a way they are trying to reach a younger audience and a more online audience at that. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been such a big and successful game that both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, or their campaign staff, know that this is going to be a way for them to reach a large audience of potential voters.
Christian Tom the director of digital partnerships for the Biden campaign has already said that this is just the beginning of trying to engage players in their campaign. It also seems to be that they will be rolling out more decorations and other tools to try and build up their campaign before the election begins.

With how popular video games have become over the past decade I think that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris seem like they are trying to get caught up with the times and target a large audience of people in the gamer world. It will be interesting to see if Donald Trump and his Campaign directors try and take a similar approach and what his response to all this might be.
It will also be interesting to see how many people actually use these in-game signs or if they are just going to be overlooked by many. This can be a very smart use of their tools and a way to really think outside the box as a way to get votes. On the other hand, it can be a total bust and gamers might not want to use the political items to decorate in their gamer world. I guess we will have to wait to see how well this campaign approach goes.
