Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War announcement coming ‘fairly soon’
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War could be announced soon.
Activision has taken an unusually long time to announce the new Call of Duty. Usually, by this time, we’ve gotten the announcement and seen gameplay. But here we are in August with no idea as to what Call of Duty 2020 will be.
Well, we’ve got some ideas. Thanks to numerous leaks, it’s all but confirmed to be Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. But when can we expect a formal announcement?
“Fairly soon,” according to the publisher. During an earnings call with investors, Activision confirmed that we will be getting a new Call of Duty this year — as expected. The publisher didn’t offer any specifics but confirmed that it will have both a campaign mode and online mode, both of which are currently being tested.
"“The game looks incredible right now and, internally, people are having a ton of fun playing across its campaign mode as well as the online mode the developers are very well known for.”"

It was also confirmed that Treyarch and Raven Software are developing this year’s game but, again, that was pretty much assumed. Treyarch is part of a trio of studios that work in rotation on Call of Duty. Since 2010, the studio has primarily focused on the Black Ops subseries, which is one of the most lauded in the franchise. However, in a controversial move, Activision scrapped the campaign in Black Ops 4 and instead opted for the battle royale mode, Blackout. So it’s nice to hear that a campaign will be returning in this year’s game.
With this year’s game rumored to be Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, it’s unclear if it will be a continuation of the story or a reboot like we saw with Modern Warfare. We also have no real specifics as to how the multiplayer will function alongside Call of Duty: Warzone, the free-to-play battle royale mode that launched in 2019 alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. We know Activision has plans to continue supporting the mode, but will it be thematically updated for Black Ops Cold War?
Hopefully, we’ll find out soon because we’re already in August and new Call of Duty games typically release in October or November. Let’s also remember that this year sees the release of next-gen consoles, so maybe that’s another reason for the lack of announcements thus far. We can probably assume the game will release alongside the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 this holiday season.
