Due to demand, Cold Symmetry has opened up the PC beta for Mortal Shell.

Interested in checking out Cold Symmetry’s “tough-as-nails” Souls-like action RPG, Mortal Shell? Demand for access to the closed beta was apparently so overwhelming that the developer has simply opened up access to everyone. The beta is currently available to download through the Epic Games Store.

Mortal Shell is one of the more intriguing games of 2020. Developed by a small indie team, Mortal Shell is clearly inspired by the Dark Souls franchise. Cold Symmetry has been open about wanting people to return “to that familiar, satisfying pain of traditional soulslike – deliberate, measured, and merciless.”

In Mortal Shell, different playstyles are unlocked by discovering and equipping “shells,” playable bodies with unique abilities that you can inhabit. There are four unique shells in the game currently and the beta allows you to experience two of them: Harros and Tiel. It is through this beta that players can get a feel for “their subtleties in combat.”

While Cold Symmetry has been open and upfront about the inspiration behind Mortal Shell and its combat mechanics, they are keeping the story a secret for a little while longer. The beta has no spoilers and much of the area has been cordoned off. You can expect much more exploration when the full game releases later this year.

As a Souls-like game, Mortal Shell will undoubtedly offer players a challenge. Cold Symmetry even offered a warning for potential newcomers to the genre:

"Before we leave you, a warning: Mortal Shell was made for battle-hardened soulslike fans. It is vindictive design, assembled with spite. It will take the best among you around an hour to complete it. For everyone else, expect your progress to be much slower."

The beta for Mortal Shell runs through July 10. However, given the enthusiastic response, I wonder if Cold Symmetry will extend it to give even more players a chance to get in and try it out. Mortal Shell is expected to release later this year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. A next-gen version of the game has not yet been announced.
