The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Summer Update brings the heat and more.

Nintendo has announced that the first wave of Summer Updates for Animal Crossing: New Horizons will arrive on July 3 and it’s a big one.

First off, the update is adding Swimming and Diving into the game. Technically, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been ready for this for a while as you could see from the fact that whenever you’d go fishing on the beach you could see detailed rock formations just barely off-camera. It’s been ready but now it’s finally safe to go back in the water.

While you’re in the water you can go diving for new sea creatures. The trailer showed sea stars, sea anemone and spotted garden eels. When you find them, you can donate them to the museum and Blathers will put them in the aquariums with the other fish. A particularly cute part of the trailer showed the spotted garden eels ducking into the ground as a fish swam overhead.

Another thing it showed being grabbed from the ocean floor was a scallop. While not exciting in itself, the scallop seemed to summon the adorable otter, Pascal. You can give scallops to Pascal in exchange for nautical themed DIY recipes. The example they shown in the trailer was some very highly detailed mermaid themed furniture including an animated wallpaper that looked like your home was in the Disney version of Atlantis.

In addition to all of this, Nintendo also showed a weird moment where they said “New Encounter?” We then saw the villager running up to the east beach where Gulliver was laying in the sand. Normally that’s nothing new except this Gulliver was dressed as a pirate and speaking like a pirate. Is it a twin? Is it a special item Gulliver? Does Gulliver have a job as a modern-day pirate patroling international water and committing horrible atrocities on whoever ventures forth? Time will tell.

And finally, they also announced that the second wave of summer stuff was going to hit in early August but they gave no hints. And as many of the transitions in the trailer were done with fireworks, it’s a pretty safe bet you can tell what’s going to happen on July 4th in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
