Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sales could reach 10 million units, which is well above EA’s predictions. Perhaps this could spark more single-player Star Wars games.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was already a critical hit, now it’s a commercial success as well. During EA’s Q3 2020 earnings call with investors, the publisher revealed that sales of the single-player Star Wars title had “significantly beat our expectations.”

EA originally predicted Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to sell between 6-8 million units for the fiscal year. It has already “hit the high end of that in the third quarter,” CFO Blake Jorgensen revealed. The game is now on track to reach 10 million unit sales.

The commercial success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order should help put to rest the notion that single-player games aren’t as popular as multiplayer or games as a service titles. Clearly, there’s still a big market for story-driven, single-player adventures.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order may be the latest, but it’s hardly the only single-player game to find commercial success. Sony is known for its single-player games with the likes of God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon: Zero Dawn and plenty more. In just a few months, Naughty Dog will release The Last of Us Part II, the highly anticipated sequel that will most likely go on to sell millions of copies within the first week.

You’d think with all of these success stories, the notion that single-player games are dead or dying would finally go away. Yet for some reason, publishers continue to push out multiplayer-centric games.

For Star Wars, we’re talking about a universe with deep lore and great storytelling potential. EA should be chomping at the bit to release more single-player games. Hopefully, the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will convince them to do so.

EA hasn’t yet announced its plans for what’s next with the Star Wars IP, but there are rumors that a Knights of the Old Republic remake is in development. The publisher last revealed there was some “Star Wars stuff” in the works, but that it won’t be released until sometimes around “[financial year] ’22 or maybe earlier,” which would be between April 2021 and March 2022.
