Xbox Games with Gold’s February 2020 lineup disappoints

Microsoft has unveiled the free batch of games for Xbox LIVE Gold members for the month of February 2020 and it leaves a lot to be desired.

Yikes. Following a somewhat decent January Games with Gold lineup, Microsoft has dropped a complete dud for February. Next month’s lineup of free games for Xbox LIVE Gold members and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers has been revealed and it’s a mixed back of eclectic titles that are either really niche or really, really outdated.

Kicking off the month is moto-racing title TT Isle of Man. I’m sure this is a great game if you’re a fan of motocross racing but there’s no way this has mass appeal, right? Maybe I’m just being ignorant, but this seems like an incredibly niche title. I guess if you’re in love with the prospect of taking on all 37.73 miles of the legendary Snaefell Mountain course, then this game is perfect for you.

The other free Xbox One title is Call of Cthulhu. Admittedly, this one seems to have a little more appeal as an investigative horror game. I think being based on the classic pen and paper RPG and being set within the universe of H.P. Lovecraft makes it feel a little more narrow in its reach.

It doesn’t get much better on Xbox 360. The multiplayer hack-and-slash adventure Fable Heroes will be available for Xbox 360 and backward compatible for Xbox One. Released back in 2012, reviews for this game were not so positive. I can’t imagine it has aged very well.

Rounding out February’s lineup for games is Star Wars Battlefront. Yes, this is the original classic Battlefront from 2004 — the one that everyone loved. This wouldn’t be so bad of an addition to the lineup except for the fact that it won’t offer online gameplay support.

Sure, you can play through battles from the first six Star Wars films solo but half the fun of Battlefront is multiplayer. On the other hand, I guess we still have the current, more modern Battlefront II for those who want multiplayer. I don’t know, it just seems like a pointless addition to the lineup to me.

In any case, TT Isle of Man will be available from February 1-29, while Call of Cthulhu will be available from February 16 to March 15. Fable Heroes will be free for the first half of the month, February 1-15, while Star Wars Battlefront will close it out from February 16-29.
