PS5: PlayStation 5’s controller could be called the DualShock 5
According to Sony’s PlayStation FAQ, the PS5 controller could very well be called the DualShock 5. What a shocker!
When it comes to naming conventions, Sony has been pretty straightforward with the PlayStation brand. We have the numbered PlayStation consoles (PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and soon PS5) along with their respective DualShock controllers. It looks like the same will hold true for the PlayStation 5 and its associated controller.
Although Sony has already confirmed the PS5 along with some of the new features coming with its controller, the company has yet to actually announce the name of the controller. However, according to the official French PlayStation website (via IGN), it could very well just be called the DualShock 5.
The website doesn’t flat out reveal the name, but the FAQ for the similarities and differences between PlayStation 4 models all mention compatibility with the “DS4”, or DualShock 4, as well as the “DS5,” which is likely short for “DualShock 5.” Presumably, this would be the likely name for Sony’s next-gen PlayStation 5 controller.
Sony has only briefly spoken about the PlayStation 5 and its respective controller. We know it will feature haptic feedback in place of the current “rumble” technology, as well as “adaptive triggers.” The goal is to create a more immersive experience when playing games.

Unfortunately, we’ve yet to see either the console or the controller. Despite a holiday 2020 launch, Sony is keeping the look of its next-gen console a mystery.
We don’t know when Sony will officially unveil the PS5, but there is chatter that a reveal event could be held next month. With Sony skipping E3 this year, it’s likely any sort of PS5 event will be its own exclusive things.
This shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. With the PS4, Sony hosted its own PlayStation Meeting to officially announce the console. However, they did show it at E3 that same year. Sony has since opted to skip the annual trade show, meaning the PS5 will not be prominently featured at E3 this year.
Sony has kind of done things a little differently this time around. They didn’t make a huge deal when announcing the system or its release window There wasn’t some huge event announcing the existence of the PS5.
Most of the information we’ve learned about the system has been via exclusive interviews. That said, the unveiling of the console will likely be reserved for a special PlayStation event, likely in February.
