With The Rise of Skywalker hitting theaters this week, we can look forward to next year’s release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Following the success of LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Skywalker Saga looks to achieve critical acclaim much like its predecessor. It appears that this game won’t be some run-of-the-mill carbon copy, as director James McLoughlin and designer Arthur Parsons made that clear during an interview with E3 over the summer.

"“We’ve basically overhauled everything from the ground up. We started with the camera system. We have a new combat system. We have a new AI system. Obviously new technologies we’ve brought into the game means the fidelity of the graphics is completely different to what people are used to. We’ve got environmental effects on all of the Lego and essentially we’ve built the whole game from the ground up with all new stuff.”"

This time around, players will have the freedom to start the game from any episode in the Skywalker saga as opposed to being forced to play the game in chronological order, meaning that you can start from the beginning with A New Hope or skip it and come back later if you choose.

This was confirmed by Parsons himself when he stated, “It’s a whole new game. You’ve got the freedom of space. You can travel from planet to planet and you basically start where you want to start. I’d always start Return of the Jedi, but then you’re free to go where you want.”

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is scheduled to be released on the PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch at some point in 2020. It’s possible the game could come to “next-gen” consoles as well as both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are slated to launch during the 2020 holiday season. However, no specific announcement regarding this has been made.

As for why The Skywalker Saga didn’t launch this year, it could have something to do with the theatrical release of The Rise of Skywalker. The ninth and final film in the Skywalker movie saga will wrap everything up and it’s likely Lucasfilm and Disney didn’t want anything spoiled ahead of time.

The Rise of Skywalker arrives in theaters on Friday, December 20. It will finally conclude the nine movie story arc which first began with A New Hope all the way back in 1977. It’s going to be wild to replay the entire saga in LEGO form next year.
