One patch ahead: Genesis Aladdin gets a patch in Disney Classics release

In the upcoming Disney Classics collection containing many versions of both Aladdin and The Lion King, the Genesis version of Aladdin will have a “final cut” that serves as a day one patch

Admittedly, gamers of a certain age sometimes wear very rose-tinted glasses when recalling memories of the cartridge era of video games. Why, back in our day, there weren’t all these updates and day one patches! You just put your game cartridge in the console and it worked, by gum!

The actual reality is that while you could put a game cartridge in a console and it ran, plenty of 8- and 16-bit games ran poorly or had very bad bugs, to the point where they might be virtually unplayable. And that was a physical cartridge already out on the market; you couldn’t “patch it” unless you recalled it and put out new versions, which was done on occasion but not often.

With that in mind, we have the re-release of two 16-bit classics coming at the end of this month under the “Disney Classics” banner (which hopefully indicates an ongoing thing), Aladdin and The Lion King. Both are revered for their stunning graphics for the time and the collection will actually feature several different versions of each game from various consoles; but, the Genesis version of Aladdin, in particular, seems to be getting a little extra attention in this release.

While you will certainly be able to play the original Genesis release just as it was back in the day, there will also be a “final cut” mode that will feature a few changes and improvements. These improvements range from new boss patterns to improved graphical effects and even some new areas.

It’s cool that we get an improved version of Aladdin for the Genesis since that’s easily the most popular game in the collection, so if one game in it was going to get any special attention, that should obviously be it. It would’ve been nice if that was an across the board thing though just because I wonder if they could what improvements would they make to other versions

The Disney Classics collection containing various versions of Aladdin and The Lion King releases on October 29 on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Hopefully, it’s the first in a series of releases because there are more than a few memorable Disney games from the 8- and 16-bit era that would be fun to revisit on modern consoles.
