Madden 20’s new Superstar KO Mode is designed to give you a quick dose of football action with a mix of fantasy, arcade-like gameplay.

Madden 20‘s September update has arrived. For those of you hoping to start your franchise, sadly, this isn’t the roster update that you were probably waiting for.

This is more of a general gameplay update that adds new features and tunes gameplay based on feedback.

The highlight of today’s update is the brand new Superstar KO Mode. The new mode is perfect for those with a busy schedule. While Madden and other sports simulation games typically take around 45 minutes to an hour to complete, Superstar KO is designed to give you a quick dose of football action with five-minute games that offer Ultimate Team rewards.

Superstar KO mode isn’t just about game length, though. The new mode revolves around one of Madden 20‘s biggest new features – “Superstar X-Factor” traits. New to the franchise, these Superstar X-Factor traits grant a few dozen of the NFL’s most elite player special abilities that help them stand out on the virtual gridiron.

In the mode, you select a premade team with a condensed playbook and different strengths and weaknesses. Then you draft your X-Factor players (three rounds with a pool of 60 players to choose from). The pool includes both current players and past Hall of Fame legends, like Jerry Rice and Jim Brown.

From there, you can compete in solo or squad matchups in thrilling five-minute games. Each team gets one position to try and score a touchdown and successfully convert the two-point conversion. If both teams do so, it goes into a variation of the Tug of War minigame previously seen in the NCAA Football series

Like Ultimate Team, it seems Superstar KO is designed as a live service and will be continuously updated throughout the season. Superstar KO will not have microtransactions, however.

In addition to the new mode, the September update also adds two more Superstar X-Factor Abilities: Selfless and Return Man.

Selfless, inspired by Pat Tillman, is available in Franchise and Ultimate Team (available exclusively to the MUT Master Pat Tillman player-item). The description reads:

When players with this ability enter the zone, they will receive no benefits but will instead put all of their on-field teammates in the zone, until each is knocked out with their individual default knockout conditions. This ability will be available in both Franchise and Ultimate Team. For Ultimate Team, this ability is exclusive to the MUT Master Pat Tillman player-item.

Return Man gives players the ability to “quickly shift momentum and change directions without sacrificing speed on kick and punt returns.” This ability won’t be added in Ultimate Team until mid to late September and Franchise mode “very soon.”

Beyond the new mode and X-Factor abilities, the Madden 20 September Title Update contains all of the usual presentation and gameplay fixes. Full patch notes for the update can be found here.
