Sony has subbed Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 with Detroit: Become Human as part of July’s free PlayStation Plus lineup.

As the first Tuesday of the month, today is when Sony sets live the new batch of free PlayStation Plus games. This month, we were to receive Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 and Horizon Chase Turbo. But in a sudden, last-minute switch, Sony has replaced Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 with Detroit: Become Human Digital Deluxe.

Sony didn’t provide a reason for the unexpected swap to the lineup for July, but did apologize “for any inconvenience” it might cause.

Detroit: Become Human released last year and became Quantic Dream’s most successful launch with over two million sales. The game received “generally favorable” reviews with a 78/100 on Metacritic.

In a write-up for the game on App Trigger, our very own Daniel George had this to say about Detroit: Become Human:

"“The world of Detroit fails to land on most occasions, presenting interesting concepts and gameplay mechanics only to fumble in its presentation over and over again. The diverting choice-driven nature of the game could have been amazing, and there are entire scenarios that can be missed out essentially begging for chapter or playthrough replays, but it’s way too campy and beats you over the head with its themes while pretending they’re saying something new.”"

That said, he praised actors Bryan Dechart (Connor) and Clancy Brown (Hank) who somehow managed to deliver “VA career-defining performances” in spite of David Cage’s on the nose writing.

It’s technically a two-for-one trade with PES 2019 as Detroit: Become Human Digital Deluxe also includes a free digital copy of Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream’s classic interactive drama/action-adventure title originally released for PlayStation 3 in 2010.

As someone who was late to the Quantic Dream party, I played Heavy Rain as a remaster on PS4 and was a big fan of its themes and emotional impact in spite of some cringe voice acting and painful controls. But it did introduce me to Quantic Dream and from there I went on to play Beyond: Two Souls, which I also enjoyed.

As a fan of Quantic Dream, Detroit: Become Human was on my list of game’s to play. For some reason or another, though, I never actually got around to it. Patience appears to have paid off though, and a lackluster July lineup just got exciting for me.

Quantic Dream’s storytelling and approach to game design might not be for everyone – especially if you were looking forward to PES 2019 – but it’s definitely worth at least booting up to at least see what David Cage and Quantic Dream are all about. If anything, at least experience Heavy Rain.

And if it’s not for you, July also brings a free copy of Horizon Chase Turbo, a racing title inspired by “racers of the arcade’s golden age.”
