Yesterday was the first Tuesday of February which means it's time to claim your free PS Plus games for PS5 and PS4. As per usual, there are three free games available to download through PlayStation Plus, regardless of what tier you subscribe to.

The highlight of this month is Foamstars, a brand new game from Square Enix. Foamstars is a 4v4 onlnie party shooter in which you use foam to create environmental tactical advantages and blast your opponents. The game has been compared to Nintendo's family-friendly arena shooter, Splatoon, although its colorful cast of quirky characters — each with their own unique foam gun and skill set — liken it more to Blizzard's hero shooter Overwatch.

These sort of arena shooters can be hit or miss but almost always rely on a large player base in order to succeed early on. By releasing it through PS Plus for free, Square Enix is at least exposing the game to a large audience at launch, perhaps increasing the game's chance for success.

In addition to Foamstars, there are two other games available this month through PS Plus: Rollerdrome and Steelrising.

Rollerdrome is a third-person hybrid shooter-skater "that blends high octane, visceral combat with fluid movement and tricking mechanics." Rollerdrome, developed by Roll7 and published by Private Division, was originally released in August 2022 to generally favorable reviews. Admittedly, I've never played so it being available on PS Plus gives me a chance to download it and see what it's all about.

Meanwhile, Steelrising is a Souls-like action role-playing game set during an alternate version of the French Revolution where you'll use strength and speed combined with skill to fight robot armies. You play as Aegis, an automaton masterpiece made by an engineer working for the Clockwork King.

Foamstars and Rollerdrome are both available natively on PS4 and PS5, while Steelrising is only available on PS5.
