One of the dirty little secrets about console launches is that there often isn't that much to play on the new machines. It takes time for developers to really figure out what they can do with the power they've been given. Thankfully, backwards compatibility lets us bide our time with classics until the new classics are born. The 2005 arcade sports offering Super Mario Strikers absolutely meets the definition of classic, and soon it will be available on the Switch 2's library of GameCube classics.

Captains include the usual Nintendo faves such as Mario, Donkey Kong, and Waluigi battling in multiple modes with the typical powerups. There are turtle shells, mushrooms, and even a Chain Chomp that would like to take a bite out of the opposition. The patented Super Strike is a shot that can give you two goals at once. What, did you expect Wario to play fair or something?

I've often lamented that we aren't getting as many arcade titles as we did during the heyday of titles like NBA Jam and NFL Blitz. But with the recent release of Rematch, and now the return of Mario Strikers, we can enjoy some incredibly fun arcadey soccer.

If you want to really kick it (See what I did there?) old school, there's a wireless Nintendo GameCube controller compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2, and it's available for Nintendo Switch online members to purchase.

Super Mario Strikers joins the Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube library July 3. Somebody else man the barbecue grill, I've got to show these kids what's up.
