The internet loves Jason and Lucia, the couple at the heart of Grand Theft Auto 6. But a series that has never given us a functional, loving relationship before now has people wondering how this might go badly. One of the prevailing theories is that Jason may be an undercover cop, which from everything we've learned so far makes it seem like he would be deceiving Lucia. I wasn't sure about it, but the latest trailer does offer some more potential clues.
The prison guard seems to recognize him
When Jason is picking Lucia up as she's released from prison, the guard wonders if he has seen Jason before. He gives a noncomittal response of "maybe." Since this is a women's prison, it's possible the guard saw Jason dropping someone off. Whatever it means, this doesn't feel like something they just put in the game (or the game's second trailer) for no reason.
Other crooks suspect him of being law enforcement
Again, the Grand Theft Auto series is not subtle with its storytelling. One of Jason's criminal contacts literally screams that "This guy's a fed!" Figuring out who doesn't fit in their world is a huge survival skill for career criminals. As I mentioned, no line of dialogue in GTA cutscenes is thrown in by accident.
It's a matter of trust
Another cutscene shows some cops speaking with each other, and one tells another that cops gotta trust each other. We're playing a game about unrepentent criminals. Why is this scene even here? If one of the two protagonists is a police officer, it makes a whole lot more sense.
You never go full Point Break
No story in fiction is completely original. The Fast and Furious movies have made billions of dollars at this point, and they start with a forbidden romance between a cop and a criminal. It has made a lot of money because it works really well. As many movie buffs have pointed out, that is also the basic plot of Point Break. The romance between warring clans goes all the way back to Shakespeare, and he didn't create the plot either.
As in those movies, just because Jason starts the game as a cop doesn't mean he will end the game as one. He could easily be corrupt, playing the two sides against each other. None of this would be new territory for GTA. San Andreas saw CJ caught in the machinations of corrupt Officer Tenpenny, as well as government agent Mike Toreno.
Or is Rockstar playing with us? At the beginning of the trailer, Jason says he's "fixing some leaks," a not subtle nod to all the bits of info that have gotten out. It's a long way until May 26, 2026, but amateur detectives will dig through everything until then.
