Super Mario RPG: Everything to know about the Nintendo Switch remake
If you’ve been on social media these past couple of days, you’ve probably seen Super Mario RPG trending. Set to release next week for the Nintendo Switch, here’s everything you need to know about the game.
What is Super Mario RPG?
Old-school Nintendo fans will remember Super Mario RPG from the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1996. This 2023 release is a remake of that game. While the overall story premise and many of the original gameplay features return, Nintendo has updated the visuals and introduced some new mechanics as well.
In short, Super Mario RPG is an action-adventure blending isometric 3D platforming and exploration with turn-based combat encounters.
What is the story of Super Mario RPG?
When the Smithy Gang, a group of sentient weapons from another dimension, invade the Mushroom Kingdom, they break the wish-granting Star Road into seven pieces. Set off as five playable characters — Mario, Bowser, Peach, Geno and Mallow — and collect the star pieces to help repair Star Road and defeat the Smithy Gang. The original Super Mario RPG was praised for both its story and humor, all of which should return in this remake.
What’s new in Super Mario RPG?
Again, many of the original game’s features and gameplay mechanics return. Exploration is primarily done in an isometric 3D world, while bumping into enemies will engage in turn-based combat encounters.
When in combat, you’ll select one of four action commands (Attack, Item, Special, Other). In addition to regular attacks, Specials are unique to each character and can deal damage, restore HP or boost allies.
When using the Action Command, successfully timing your pressing of the A button will deal more damage to enemies. On defense, it will decrease the damage you take from attacks. If you time your attacks perfectly, you’ll deal damage to all enemies.
Every successful Action Command will now fill an Action Gauge (located in the lower left corner of the screen). When filled, you can unleash the Triple Move, a powerful three-character special move. The Triple Move changes depending on who is currently in your party and each are beneficial in its own way.
Also new to Super Mario RPG is the Breezy Mode. For those who want to experience the story of the game without the stress of combat, Breezy difficulty will make battles easier as well as leveling up. If you find yourself struggling, you can switch to Breezy Mode at any time during the game.
Other notable features include the ability to take a break from the main gameplay to play mini-games, switch the music to the original SNES version, and a Monster List to help keep track of every enemy you encounter.
When does Super Mario RPG release?
Super Mario RPG will be released for the Nintendo Switch on November 17, 2023. It is currently available for pre-order for $59.99.
