Assassin’s Creed has been one of the most popular video game franchises for over 15 years. Since the first release of Assassin’s Creed in 2007, there have been a total of 13 main installments to the franchise over the years. Fans have since fell in love with fan favorite characters such as Ezio Auditore, Altair, Jacob Frye, Edward Kenway, Kassandra, and so many more. With the release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage that took place on October 5, it is time to look back at history of the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Assassin’s Creed Games in Release Date Order

  • Assassin’s Creed (2007)
  • Assassin’s Creed II (2009)
  • Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (2010)

  • Assassin’s Creed Mirage (2023)

The following list above is how the video games came out in terms of their release date. If you jumped onto the bandwagon in 2007 and have been a fan ever since, you have more likely than not been playing the games in release date order.

Throughout your journey in playing these the year they came out, you will notice that there are some major time jumps. This is because the Assassin’s Creed universe is so big that there is an abundance of story to be told. Ubisoft have created games in the Assassin’s Creed universe from many different time periods and by playing the games in release date order, you are making some pretty large time jumps.

However, if you want to run through the Assassin’s Creed franchise in the order of which the story takes place in real time, you can play them in chronological order.

Assassin’s Creed Games in Chronological Order

  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (431 B.C.–422 B.C.)
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins (49 B.C. – 44 B.C.)
  • Assassin’s Creed Mirage (861)
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (872 – 878)
  • Assassin’s Creed (1191)
  • Assassin’s Creed 2 (1476 – 1499)
  • Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (1499–1507)
  • Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (1511–1512)
  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (1715–1722)
  • Assassin’s Creed Rogue (1752–1760)
  • Assassin’s Creed III (1754–1783)
  • Assassins Creed Unity (1789–1794)
  • Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (1868)

Currently, the Assassin’s Creed universe spans from 431 B.C. to 1868. That is thousands of years of history inside the Assassin’s Creed franchise for you to dive into. As you can tell, there are some major time jumps between certain games, but that is what continues to make the franchise so intriguing.

If you start playing the games from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey to Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, you will definitely notice in a change in generations. However, not many gamers tend to play franchises this way because they like to play the new games in the series as soon as they come out.

If you have dove into Assassin’s Creed Mirage already, you will notice that you are actually playing in a slightly older time period than you were in the previous installment of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

If you are completely new to the franchise, there is no right or wrong way to play them. I always suggest playing them in the order that they were released because that is the way that Ubisoft intended you to play them in. However, if you want to go on your own little adventure, you can always play them in chronological order.

No matter which way you decide to play these games in, I can guarantee you that you are going to have a blast. With Assassin’s Creed Mirage already out, the Assassin’s Creed universe is only growing. Even after the past 16 years, this is just the beginning for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The franchise will continue to grow and expand to many more great installments across many different time periods. There is so much more storytelling that Ubisoft is looking forward to showcase.
