If you’re playing Starfield and at this page, odds are you’ve encountered a crucial moment of the game in which one of your companions, Barrett, has died. And you may be wondering if there’s any way to save him in the game.

The answer to this question is yes, there is a way to save Barrett, but it depends on the decision you made toward the end of the main story mission High Price to Pay. Did you Defend the Lodge or Go to the Eye?

Can you save Barrett from dying?

If Barrett has died, it probably means you decided to go to the Eye. However, there’s a way to save him from dying. During that moment, if you decide to stay and defend the Lodge, Barrett will be spared.

However, there is a trade-off with this decision. In staying to defend the Lodge, it means you will leave your companions at the Eye to fend for themselves. This decision will result in Sam Coe dying at the hands of the Hunter.

It’s a lose-lose no matter what decision you make, so ultimately you should decide which companion you want to stick around with you for the remainder of the game. It’s worth noting that if you want to go to the Eye but wait too long, the Hunter will end up arriving and you’ll be forced to defend the Lodge no matter what.

Spoilers: What happens to Barrett after his death?

Once Barrett has been killed, the survivors of the Constellation will hold a memorial for him. You’ll also be able to gather his belongings from a chest downstairs. You’ll be able to equip his items on your character.

Barrett’s death (or Sam’s death) also plays a major role in the story of Starfield, so keep playing! I won’t spoil what happens.
