NHL 24: Cale Makar is a perfect cover athlete choice

The wait is finally over! EA Sports NHL has finally revealed the cover athlete for NHL 24 and that would be none other than Cale Makar. This was a perfect choice by EA Sports and the cover looks absolutely stunning.

Cale Makar is one of the best players in the NHL today, and arguably the best defenseman in the NHL. When Cale Makar was a rookie in 2019, he won the Calder Trophy as the best rookie in the NHL. Makar compiled 12 goals and 38 assists that year. This was just the tip of the iceberg of what was yet to come.

Since Makar’s rookie season, he has gone on to become a 3 time All-Star, a Norris Trophy winner, a Conn Smythe winner, and a Stanley Cup winner for the Colorado Avalanche. That is an insanely incredible resume for only being in the league 4 years at the age of 24 years old. With a resume like that, it makes sense that the time to grace an NHL cover is now.

EA Sports tends to sway towards the younger players to grace the NHL covers, unless there is a special reason otherwise. EA Sports continued that trend, but seeing Makar on the cover was surprising in terms of other NHL trends.

There aren’t a lot of NHL defenseman who get the opportunity to be on the cover of an NHL video game. Over the past 20 years, Cale Makar now becomes only the third defenseman to be on the cover behind P.K. Subban for NHL 19 and before that Dion Phaneuf for NHL 09. Makar is also the third ever Colorado Avalanche player to be on the cover to join the ranks of Peter Forsberg (NHL 98) and Joe Sakic (NHL 04).

It is exciting to see Cale Makar as the cover athlete for NHL 24. The 24-year-old has still yet to reach his prime and will only continue to get better. EA Sports made a very good choice and fans have already been reacting in a very positive way. We can’t wait to see what NHL 24 has in store for us with the official reveal coming August 16.
