Mortal Kombat 2 cast: what we know so far
A new Mortal Kombat movie is in the works as a sequel to the 2021 film. Here’s what we know so far about its casting.
Video game-inspired movies are continuing to build in popularity. But long before the success of The Super Mario Bros. or Sonic the Hedgehog movies, Mortal Kombat had its own stream of film adaptations.
The first, releases in 1995, was simply titled Mortal Kombat, and spawned a sequel titled Mortal Kombat: Annihilation just two years later in 1997. Fast forward a few decades, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema decided to revamp the game’s movie series once again with the 2021 release of Mortal Kombat. The film featured the likes of Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Josh Lawson as Kano and Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs. The film was directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham.
On January 26, 2022, Warner Bros. officially greenlit the sequel, bringing back McQuoid to direct and Jeremy Slater taking on screenplay duties this time around.
So who’s been tipped to join the cast for Mortal Kombat 2?
Mortal Kombat 2 cast: what we know so far
Currently, we don’t know which of the previous cast or characters will be returning for Mortal Kombat 2. Slater did reveal that Johnny Cage would be appearing, having been missing from the first film. In aninterview with Variety on the first film’s release, McQuoid said that the character of Johnny Cage was not included in Mortal Kombat (2021) because the character was a “giant personality” that would throw the film out of balance.”
As for who will be stepping up to embody the character in the sequel, numerous outlets have reported that Karl Urban (The Boys, Judge Dredd) is in final talks to play Johnny Cage.
Urban has played a variety of characters over his career, including Dr. Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy in Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness, and as Skurge in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok.
