Starting at 9:00 a.m. PST (12:00 p.m. EST), Destiny 2 will be brought offline temporarily. This is when pre-loading for Lightfall will become available for all platforms.

Destiny 2: Lightfall Pre-load and install requirements

Destiny 2: Lightfall will be available on PlayStation and Xbox consoles as well as PC. Storage requirements for pre-loading and installing will differ depending on your platform.

On PlayStation, for example, those who are using the PS4 version of Destiny 2 will need to have about 80GB of additional free space to download Lightfall. Both the new and old files will need to be in your storage for the pre-load and during the 24-hour downtime, but thankfully these older packages will be removed once Lightfall launches.

Bungie noted that the pre-load of Lightfall had been pushed out early in some regions. Don’t download this! Bungie recommends pausing this download until pre-load officially begins on February 27 if you want to continue playing the game.

The sizes are even more extreme on PC where Steam and Epic Games Store players will need upwards of 223GB free space in order to pre-load the game. The PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Microsoft Store versions are a bit less demanding. Here are the pre-load install requirements, according to Bungie, who notes that the install size may vary and that this is the maximum size possible.

Destiny 2’s servers will return at 9:00 a.m. PST on February 28 at which point you’ll be able to start playing once again. Given the size of Destiny 2: Lightfall, it’s recommended to pre-load the expansions before its official release. This will allow you to jump in and experience the latest content right at launch, assuming there are no server issues.

When Lightfall does launch it will kick off Season of Defiance. This will, of course, continue the story of Destiny 2 as we focus on the “ground war on Earth” and defending the planet against Calus’ Shadow Cabal Legions. Access to Season of Defiance is included with the Lightfall expansion but future seasons will have to be purchased individually or as part of the Annual Pass.
