Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Full premium expansion hinted for 2023
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been off to an electric start. Released on October 28, the game has already surpassed $1 billion in total sales in just the first ten days. While this isn’t the first time a Call of Duty game hit the $1 billion mark, it is definitely the quickest by a total of five days. The previous record, held by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, hit the $1 billion mark after 15 days.
It is clear that the gaming community was extremely hyped about the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The multiplayer offers a ton of different items and cosmetics to unlock, an MGB Nuke that you can acquire, and Activision has a lot planned for this video game going forward. With that being said, players can look forward to even more Modern Warfare 2 content in the future, according to Activision. In its latest financial release, the publisher noted plans for a new, full premium Call of Duty game in 2023. It’s rumored that this could be an expansion to Modern Warfare 2.
When you take a deep read into Activision’s financial report, there is a statement in there that has sparked a lot of conversation. The statement reads as follows: “Activision is looking forward to building on its current momentum in 2023, with plans for next year including the most robust Call of Duty live operations to date, the next full premium release in the blockbuster annual series, and even more engaging free-to-play experiences across platforms.”
It has been known for quite some time that there are no plans for a mainstream Call of Duty title to release in 2023. When this news first came out, it kind of caught everyone off guard. However, it didn’t mean that we wouldn’t get any Call of Duty content in 2023.
The wording of the Activision financial release that states a “full premium release” has made a lot of people start to think maybe there is a chance that we ma get a new Call of Duty with tons of new content. However, Jason Schreier, a reporter for Bloomberg, says that everyone is falling for wording the wrong way. Schreier describes the statement as selling the premium release as a $70 game with a new single-player campaign and multiplayer offering. But at the end of the day, the new content would still be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In theory, this makes the most sense for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, if it has already been reported that a new mainstream Call of Duty will not be released in 2023, you wouldn’t think that developers would go back on their word. Especially since they would have to have already been working on developing it by now. Secondly, with how much success Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has had so far, having a $70 premium expansion of some sort with tons of new content should do very well for the game overall.
Is it a little annoying that you would have to pay the price of a newly released Call of Duty video game? Sure it is, but if they add an entirely new single-player sotory and tons of additional multiplayer content, it is not that bad. Plus, that would also keep their statement true about not being a main entry to the Call of Duty franchise in 2023. On top of it all, Jason Schreier also confirmed that the next Call of Duty entry will indeed be coming in 2024 by developers Treyarch.
When it is time for the full premium release in 2023, we can expect that it will most likely happen after the Summer months of 2023. A September or October release for the expansion would be ideal as it would give gamers a ton of time to accomplish everything Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has to offer and give all the gamers a fresh start to end 2023 and well into 2024.
