Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may also require a cell phone number to play
If you have gotten the opportunity to play Overwatch 2, you would know that Activision Blizzard decided to add a new policy that hasn’t been very popular in the community. It is required that players add their cell phone number to their Battle.net account in order to play the game. The reason for this new change is said to help out with toxicity and abuse within the game. It appears Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be adopting this same policy.
This new change hasn’t gone over too well in the Overwatch 2 community and the reason being is that it is preventing certain gamers from accessing their game. If you have a prepaid cell phone, such as Cricket Wireless or any other prepaid cell phone, that number won’t work if adding it to your Battle.net account. You will need a valid “post-paid” phone number in order for it to work. It’s believed the same could be true for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
For many users, this may not be a problem, but there are many who may not have a phone number or use a prepaid phone. With all of the backlash that this policy has been facing from the gaming community, it will be interesting to see if it changes before the official release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on October 28.
This new Call of Duty game is going to be massive, and Activision is going to want as many players as possible. However, if the new policy does indeed help prevent abuse and toxicity in the game, they might stand by this decision.
I think another major reason why so many people are upset with the new phone number verification rule is the fact that they are spending $70-plus on a video game they can’t play if they don’t have a post-paid phone number.
At the end of the day, Activision is going to do whatever it can to eliminate as much toxicity as possible. And if you’ve played a Call of Duty game, you know there’s a ton of it.
If this is a way to do that, they will keep and enforce this new policy. If after some time it is shown that this new phone number policy isn’t making that much of a difference, then maybe they will ease up on it a little bit. With how much backlash Overwatch 2 has taken from the policy, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may decide to ease up on it a little bit.
