College Football is officially back. While the majority of Division I teams don’t start their season until this weekend, “Week 0” saw a few teams take to the grid iron early.

Unfortunately, college football fans have been without a game to play alongside the season since NCAA Football 14, as EA cancelled the series following uncertainties regarding the use of player likenesses in-game.

Well, good news. Many of these uncertainties have since been addressed and players can now get paid for their name and likeness. While it still sort of feels like some kinks need to be ironed out with NIL deals in college football, there’s enough in place where EA felt comfortable enough to announce the return of its coveted college football video game series.

And, thankfully, this could be the last season of college football that we don’t have an actual game to play.Back in February 2021, EA officially announced EA Sports College Football. But since that announcement, the publisher has yet formally reveal any details regarding the game.

Leaks have helped hold us over as they’ve revealed morsels of details such as the goal to create an authentic college game day atmosphere. And I have to assume the game will reflect all of the changes we’ve seen across the college football landscape since NCAA Football 2014, especially the addition of the College Football Playoff and all the conference shuffles.

As of right now, the current word on the street is that EA is aiming to launch its new College Football video game in summer 2023. If everything stays on track — and I have no clue how far along development on the game even is — then it would mean that this time next year we’ll be playing as our favorite team in a college football game. The wait is hopefully almost over. We can soon rejoice and talk smack to our campus rivals.
