Madden 23 leak: Top rated quarterbacks draw debate
Madden 23 is presumably set to be revealed soon, based on a mysterious announcement coming June 16, but fans are eager to learn more about this year’s game. One of the biggest changes year-in and year-out with the Madden franchise are the player ratings. It’s always a source of debate, and EA has made rating reveals almost an event in itself.
This year, it seems some player ratings have leaked early. On social media, various accounts have tweeted out the supposed ratings of the top 32 quarterbacks in Madden 23. The leak is unverified but if true, could cause a major firestorm of debate. But that’s bound to happen regardless. It’s part of what makes Madden so fun.
According to the leaks, the top five-rated quarterbacks in Madden 23 are Patrick Mahomes (99 OVR), Aaron Rodgers (98 OVR), Tom Brady (98 OVR), Josh Allen (95 OVR) and Lamar Jackson (92 OVR).
Interestingly, most of the rating controversy seems to stem around Patrick Mahomes being the top-rated quarterback in the game. It was just a short while ago that Mahomes was considered the darling of the NFL and the future of the quarterback position. But one “down” year — which, let’s be honest, wasn’t even that bad — and it seems people are ready to cast Mahomes aside.
Mahomes actually began last season as part of Madden 22’s 99 Club. But his inconsistency ultimately resulted in a 97 overall to finish the season.
Surprisingly, Tom Brady, at 44 years old, was the only quarterback to finish the season rated 99 overall. To see him, at this age, continue to be a top-rated quarterback in Madden is astounding. And honestly, I don’t have a problem with his 98 overall rating, if true. Brady is coming off another incredible season. And though he fell short of the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl, he still threw for a league-leading 5,316 yards and 43 touchdowns.
I think Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson rounding out the top five best-rated quarterbacks is completely fair, although there’s room for debate with Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow. As it stands with the current leak, here’s how the quarterback ratings shake out so far:
- Patrick Mahomes – 99 OVR
- Aaron Rodgers – 98 OVR
- Tom Brady – 98 OVR
- Josh Allen – 95 OVR
- Lamar Jackson – 92 OVR
- Justin Herbert – 90 OVR
- Russell Wilson – 90 OVR
- Dak Prescott – 89 OVR
- Joe Burrow – 89 OVR
- Matt Stafford – 87 OVR
- Kyler Murray – 86 OVR
- Deshaun Watson – 86 OVR
- Derek Carr – 85 OVR
- Ryan Tannehill – 84 OVR
- Jalen Hurts – 82 OVR
- Matt Ryan – 81 OVR
- Kirk Cousins – 80 OVR
- Matt Jones – 79 OVR
- Baker Mayfield – 78 OVR
- Jameis Winson – 76 OVR
- Jimmy Garopolo – 75 OVR
- Trevor Lawrence – 75 OVR
- Kenny Pickett – 74 OVR
- Tua Tagovailoa – 73 OVR
- Justin Fields – 73 OVR
- Jared Goff – 72 OVR
- Zach Wilson – 72 OVR
- Trey Lance – 72 OVR
- Malik Willis – 72 OVR
- Daniel Jones – 70 OVR
- Carson Wentz – 70 OVR
- Sam Darnold – 70 OVR
Interestingly, Kenny Pickett, who was selected with the 20th Overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, is rated higher than veterans such as Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff, Daniel Jones, Carson Wentz and Sam Darnold. I really don’t have a problem with that, except I think Tagovailoa could have a big year with all the weapons he has on offense now.
Jacksonville Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence, the former No. 1 overall pick, checks in at a 75 overall which I think is fair given his struggles last season and the questions around the team. I think Justin Fields and Trey Lance could use a little boost, but that may come naturally if they perform as expected on the field.
The same leaks also revealed the fastest quarterbacks in Madden 23. And even though their overall ratings may be low, their speed may make up for it. The fastest quarterback is, of course, Lamar Jackson with a 96 Speed rating. After him, it’s Kyler Murray (93 SPD), Justin Fields (90 SPD), Jalen Hurts (89 SPD), Trey Lance (89 SPD) and Josh Allen (88 SPD).
Again, these ratings are not confirmed nor verified. And it’s possible that if the leaked document was legit that these ratings could be changed before Madden 23 is launched later this year. But right now, what do you think of these supposed ratings?
