While Square Enix’s upcoming tactical role-playing game Triangle Strategy isn’t out yet, that happens on March 4th. If you are dying to sink yourself into some tactical-RPG goodness right this second there are a handful of great, big named games to try, like Fire Emblem or XCOM. But how about a list of other, great tactical games or series that you might not have heard about before?

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions

Final Fantasy Tactics was originally released in 1998 in the United States. While most of us have heard of the game it isn’t the easiest to try and track down a copy for PlayStation. What you might not know about is Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is a viable option, it’s more or less the same game, made a little easier to play on a touch screen.

Available on both iOS and Android devices, you can sink over 40 hours into the game on your phone. Might be a smart idea to bring a charging block.

The Banner Saga Trilogy

Perhaps the coolest part of The Banner Saga is the interactive story element to the game. Depending on who lives, or dies, in combat determines what events happen throughout the series. The second coolest part is the unique art of the game, making it worth a look.

Wargroove

You may know the developer of Wargroove, Chucklefish, better than the game itself. They’ve made or published a handful of great titles: Stardew Valley, Risk of Rain, Starbound, and recently Eastward. When you’re in company with games like that you may as well give it a try.

In the game each of the fifteen commanders you can play has their own unique campaign. If you’re a fan of the Advance Wars series then this is a great spiritual successor to try.

Into the Breach

If you are into the man vs machine genre or giant mechs then look no further. At a glance Into the Breach doesn’t look like much, but IGN called Into the Breach, “..deep, satisfying, and replayable.”

Wildermyth

What caught my eye Wildermyth was the visual style, living in a hybrid 2-D/3-D world. Don’t like playing by yourself? Good news, Wildermyth has online and local co-op. The game also has procedural storytelling, so no one playthrough will be the same.

Triangle Strategy

How could I put Triangle Strategy on a list of games to play while you wait for Triangle Strategy to release? Well a demo of the first three chapters has been released leading up to the full release. The best per, you can play now and carry over your progress to the full game on March 4th.
