Pokemon Go Tour Johto celebrates everything that’s in the second generation of Pokemon. It also brings two brand new Shiny Pokemon: Mantine and Phanpy. Here’s how to catch a Shiny Phanpy in Pokemon GO.

How to catch a Shiny Phanpy in Pokemon GO

First things first: to catch Shiny Phanpy in Pokemon GO, you’ll need to get a ticket to GO Tour Johto. When you buy a ticket from the in-game shop, you’ll get a choice of either Gold or Silver. Pick Silver, as Phanpy is a version exclusive.

There will be a few ways to encounter a Shiny Phanpy during GO Tour Johto. The first is to find one in the wild. The Tour will feature a rotating set of habitats, and Phanpy will be in one of them.

The exact list of which Pokemon where isn’t known, but based on where it appears in the original games I’d guess the Mt. Silver habitat (1-2 p.m., 6-7 p.m.) is where Phanpy would be.

Phanpy will be one of the Pokemon attracted to Incense during the event, so you can keep that going throughout the event more more chances to find a Shiny Phanpy.

Shiny Pokemon don’t appear on the map as a Shiny. You’ll need to engage each and every Phanpy you encounter to check if it’s Shiny.

A Shiny Phanpy may be hard to spot, as its coloration isn’t that different than the original. A Shiny Phanpy is a lighter shade of blue compared to the original, and still has the red accents.

You’ll know that Phanpy is Shiny if you see the sparkle over the character model when the encounter starts, and if you see a sparkle near its name tag.

Typically, once a Shiny variant is introduced in Pokemon GO it stays in the game. After GO Tour Johto, Shiny Phanpy will likely be available to catch in the wild if you contend with the normal Shiny encounter rate.
