The Metal Coat is an evolution item needed to evolve certain Pokemon into Steel type forms. There are a few ways to find one, but it’s still rare. Here’s how to get a Metal Coat in Pokemon GO.

You need a Metal Coat to evolve two Pokemon: Scyther into Scizor and Onyx into Steelix. You also need the requisite 25 Candy to evolve, so the Metal Coat is the more difficult one to acquire.

There’s no set way to get a Metal Coat. For the most part, it’s down to luck. On the seventh consecutive day of spinning PokéStops, you’ll be awarded at least one of either Metal Coat, King’s Rock, Dragon Scale or Up-Grade.

Niantic seemed to have wanted to capture the same mechanics as the ones in Gold/Silver/Crystal, but I’m glad they consolidated them for future generations. Unfortunately, you’ll still need the Metal Coat specifically for Scyther and Onyx.

Metal Coats can also be obtained in Research Breakthroughs and by completing Special Research Tasks when it is offered as a reward.

You can also pull Metal Coats from friend Gifts, but it’s still entirely random and still extremely rare. It doesn’t hurt to collaborate with some friends to get a Gift train running.

As of writing, the next opportunity to get Metal Coat will be at the Pokemon GO Tour Johto, where it and other evolution items will be available as Special Research rewards. It’s a ticketed event, so you’ll need to buy your entry. It doesn’t seem like non-ticket holders will be able to guarantee these evolution items.

Unfortunately, the Metal Coat is consumed when you evolve your Pokémon, so be sure to choose the Scyther or Onyx you want to evolve wisely.

The best way to get a Metal Coat in Pokémon GO is to keep swapping gifts and spinning those stops. You’ll be sure to get one eventually, but keep tabs on what events are coming soon so you don’t miss out when a Metal Coat is offered.
