The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is out today, offering Nintendo Switch owners select DLC for free, a Nintendo 64 channel (perfect for all those people who have been begging Nintendo for a N64 mini for years) and a SEGA channel which contains many classic games originally released on the SEGA Genesis.

A lot of these games came out in a time well before “achievements” and “trophies” dominated the gaming scape. A time when almost every game out there wasn’t complete unless it had some sort of secret or cheat code. Bear in mind, most of these games came out pre-home internet so as a child I remember the sheer “information broker” feeling that rushed over me as I got to tell my friend something that could completely change up that game they were playing.

Over the next couple pages I’ll compile some of the best or just most fun codes for the games launching with the SEGA channel. Welcome to the next level, y’all.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

  • Tail’s real name and ending
    • Hitting up, up, up, down, down, down, up on the title screen switches Tail’s name in the HUD to his first name “Miles”. Also, beating the game as him gives you a slightly different ending.
  • Level Select
    • Go to the Sound Test and play the following: 19, 65, 09, 17. You’ll hear a noise. Then, head back to the title screen, hold down A and press start to go to the level select menu.
  • Unlock Super Sonic
    • Once in the Level Select menu, go to its sound test and play 04, 01, 02, 06. From there, select any stage and find you have all chaos emeralds allowing you to turn into Super Sonic any time you have more than 50 rings.

Streets of Rage 2

Lives and level select

  • On the second player’s controller, have them hold down A + C, while they’re doing that pick options. You’ll be able to choose how many lives you have as long as it’s up to 9, what stage you go to and what difficulty it’s set at.
