Why New World doesn’t have mounts (yet) and when will they be added?
New World officially launched last week and one of the first things you may be compelled to do is look up at what level you can acquire a mount. After all, who wants to run across an entire world?
Well, I’m sorry to report that as of this writing, you can’t. There are no mounts in New World right now. Everything you want to carry in the game, must be carried on the back of your character.
Why doesn’t New World have mounts, like horses?
Why is that, you may ask? Well, there’s in-game lore that explains why there are no mounts in Aeternum, but the reasoning is incredibly bizarre.
A note called ‘The Animals Revolt’ reveals “a notice of concern to carters and porters” that confirms “there are NO beasts of burden on Aeternum.” It reads:
"No horse or donkey will pull your cart, carry your pack, or tolerate a rider. All efforts to domesticate or re-domesticate these animals have led only to injury and a lot of swearing."
So for some reason, transporting horses or donkeys to Aeternum have resulted in them becoming unwieldy. And to avoid any injuries, they’ve simply been banned.
The dev explanation
Of course, there’s an actual reason for why New World doesn’t have mounts. In a roundtable with journalists conducted ahead of launch, Game Director Scot Lane simply explained that Aeternum “isn’t of the size that warrants mounts.”
Will mounts eventually be added to New World?
It sounds like the roadmap for New World does include mounts. Lane said it’s going to happen “at some point… when we feel players will benefit from them and we can do them in a really cool way that works for us.”
As it currently stands, New World doesn’t have mounts, but there are other ways to travel quickly. There’s fast travel and recall points to settlements. But if you want to quickly get to a quest and back, you’ve got to hoof it on foot.
One reason players desperately want mounts is to travel between settlements more quickly. And this is because of the way storage is handled in New World. Because storage is localized and not global, it means each settlement has its own different storage that you can only access if you are in that settlement (or if they are within connected territories). Items stored in Everfall, for example, can not be accessed when you’re in Light Fall. So if your’e in Light Fall and need something you’ve stored in another location, you’re gonna have to manually go back and pick it up.
This has opened up suggestions for other types of things, such as donkeys or wagons that could help you carry stuff in between settlements. Although it’s not in the “immediate plans,” the developers have thought about the idea of wagons, wheelbarrows or donkeys.
It sounds like when mounts are added to New World, they want it to be more than just generic horses. They want to implement it in “a really cool way.” What that way is remains to be seen right now.
