The Golden State Warriors are fighting for a playoff spot in the Western Conference and Steph Curry is a big reason why the team is even in contention. The 33-year-old sharpshooting guard has been on a tear lately, nailing 78 3-pointers over the past 11 games. He’s scored over 30 points per game in 12 of his last 13 games.

In doing so, Curry has emerged as a serious MVP candidate. But he’s not only getting recognition in real life. His play has earned him a ratings boost in the most recent NBA 2K21 player update.

As of Player Ratings Update #8, which went live late last week, Curry is now rated a 97 overall. That makes him tied with LeBron James for the highest overall rating in the game. They are the only two players rated in the game with a 97 overall. Is it possible that Curry, if he stays hot, can surpass James for the best rating?

Comparing the two players’ stats, Curry has a slight edge on James this season. With 52 games played, Curry is averaging 31.2 points per game and shooting 48.9% from the field. He’s shotting a staggering 42.5% from the three-point range. James, meanwhile, missed a couple of games with injury but is still averaging 25.4 points per game through 41 games. He’s shooting 51.3% from the field with a 36.8% three-point shot. James does have the slight edge with rebounds and assists, averaging 7.9 for each, while Curry is averaging 5.6 and 5.8, respectively. I’d give the slight advantage to Curry if only for the simple fact he’s doing all of this with considerable less talent surrounding him.

Curry isn’t the only player to receive a bump in his rating as a result of recent play. With the New York Knicks pushing for a Playoff berth for the firsts time since the 2012/13 season, Julius Randle and R.J. Barrett have also received increases to their ratings. Randle is now rated 88 overall (+1) while Barrett is 82 overall (+2).

Other players who have received slight increases to their ratings include:

  • Nikola Jokić: 96 OVR (+1)
  • Jimmy Butler: 92 OVR (+1)
  • Paul George: 89 OVR (+1)
  • Deandre Ayton: 85 OVR (+1)
  • Jonas Valančiūnas: 84 OVR (+1)
