Scott Pilgrim vs my expectations: Nintendo Switch impressions

Scott Pilgrim vs The World is finally back after disappearing for almost a full decade. Did it age well? Did it age at all? Let’s get into it.

After a little more than a decade, the incredibly excellent Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game is back and surprisingly better than I remember.

Admittedly, I don’t need to remember too hard. Back in 2010, I got the game on my PS3, and after Ubisoft removed the game from its store I made a choice to never ever sell my PS3. It has sat there as a dedicated Scott Pilgrim machine. If you’re curious if it’s that good to warrant it, yes Virginia, it is that good.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game is a game based on the incredible line of Scott Pilgrim vs The World books. There are some references to the movie scattered in but it mainly follows the book. This might not seem like a big thing but you’ll be surprised when, instead of a bass battle versus the Katayanagi Twins, you’re instead fighting a legion of robots.

The game itself is wonderful. It’s a standard beat ’em up but with slow progression and a constant unlocking of new abilities. The art style is done by the fantastic pixel artist, Paul Robertson who’s work you’re either familiar with or need to be made familiar with.

And the music is all composed by the excellent Anamanaguchi, a pop-rock Chiptune band that has worked in the past with Hatsune Miku.

This rerelease contains all of the DLC that was originally available for the game as well. So in addition to being able to play as Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, Kim Pine and Stephen Stills (whose boyfriend shows up in the game, which is nice because he was absent in the movie), you also get to play as Knives Chau and Wallace Wells. You also get Boss Battle which, if you couldn’t guess, is a massive fight against all of the bosses one after the next. Plus, there’s a Dodgeball mode which gave me big Super Dodgeball feels.

More from Nintendo

One of the coolest things is something not really present in the original — online multiplayer. You can actually get together with your friends and tear through this wonderful game, helping each other level up and unlock other characters like my personal favorite, Nega Scott or Knives’ Father.

At $15 for the game, all the DLC, all the modes, AND multiplayer you’re honestly just being rude to yourself for not getting it because I’ve been playing it on the Switch and it is so good. I was worried it wouldn’t have aged well but… it just didn’t age.
