Sony Gold Headsets and more work on the Nintendo Switch Dock
Looking to play your Nintendo Switch while docked with headphones? Good news, you can with the Sony Gold Headset and more!
I’m going to start this with telling you a little about me. I have two kids. At the time of writing, they are four and six. Soon they’ll be five and seven while, based off how the last two months have felt, I will soon be one-hundred and twenty five. Long story short, I don’t game until after they go to bed.
One of the few things about the Nintendo Switch I wasn’t a fan of is the fact that there’s no headphone jack with the Joy-Cons, so I can’t plug in a headset and listen at a loud volume when the Switch is docked. My late night Switch game has either been playing on a large screen with the sound very low or on a tiny screen while listening through a wired headset.
Recently though, I decided to try something out of curiosity. I looked over at my Sony Gold headset (my favorite headset since the original came out on the PS3), took it’s wireless dongle and plugged it into the Switch Dock. I started up Animal Crossing: New Horizons to see what happened. It worked. I’ve had a Switch since launch and I’ve had this option sitting here and I had no idea that it worked.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons sounded incredible. I could hear the winds rustling through the trees in high definition. The waves rolling in on the beach sounded gorgeous. As I passed a bonfire I actually heard it approach and pass me as if I was doing it in person. And yes, it’s incredibly chill music sounded very pretty. Everything was new.
I tried other games.
Streets of Rage 4 — its stellar soundtrack, both retro and otherwise — sounded fantastic. And the stereo sound made the game a lot more enjoyable as I was suddenly hearing enemies on my left and right. Hearing myself on the left side of a screen throwing a knife and hitting an enemy on the right in surround made it actually feel like I threw a knife a gratifying distance.
The upcoming Hatsune Miku game I’ve been working on a review also sounded amazing. I even found myself doing better at the game as it was hard not getting into how complex some of it’s songs are.

So not only did any game I try work well in this but I was amazed to find out that most of these have had surround sound just sitting there and waiting on me to get bored and discover it. That night, I posted it on my Facebook that I figured this out. I know a lot of my friends also have Sony Golds because I basically beat people over the head with them until they get one. They all tried it and were incredibly excited. Then other people started commenting that they tried them with other wireless headsets that use dongles and, sure enough, those worked as well.
So if you have access to a wireless headset with a dongle, plug that thing in. It is a straight up game changer.
