Gearbox gives a rundown on the future of Borderlands 3, including paid expansions and free content updates through Spring 2020.

Only with Borderlands could Gearbox take guns, love and tentacles, mash them together and create an insanely cool-looking expansion. At PAX East today, Gearbox hosted a panel offering a glimpse into the future of Borderlands 3. In addition to the next expansion, Gearbox announced a Steam release date and even more free content coming this year.

Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock

The highlight of the Borderlands 3 news was its next expansion, Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock. As the name suggests, the expansion centers around the marriage celebration of Sir Alistair Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs who invite you to the ice planet of Xylourgos to witness them tying the knot.

This is Borderlands we’re talking about, though, so expect some wild and crazy antics. The planet is filled by all sorts of ravenous creatures looking to claw our eyes out. A bigger threat, however, is a group of creepy occultists who worship the carcass of a fallen Vault Monster and  are hellbent on breaking up the wedding. The allegory is strong with this one.

Side stories, new weapons and cosmetics and the return of Gaige are some of the other highlights of this expansion. Guns, Love, and Tentacles will launch on March 26.

Expansion No. 3

The Borderlands 3 season pass features four campaign DLC packs. Guns, Love, and Tentacles is only the second to be released. The third will arrive this Summer. Not much was actually revealed, but Gearbox did share some concept art that highlighted “outlaws and dinosaurs.”

Borderlands 3 on Steam

Borderlands 3 is coming to Steam on March 13 with PC crossplay between Steam and Epic Games Launcher. Additionally, Gearbox will be rolling out additional PC crossplay features, like the ability to mail weapons across platforms.

Spring 2020 Roadmap

Beyond the core expansions, Gearbox will be delivering regular updates throughout Spring with free content and seasonal events.

Coming first in April is Mayhem Mode 2.0, a complete overhaul of Borderlands 3’s endgame. Gearbox wasn’t ready to fully talk about this, but the did hint at some “surprising new modifiers” and the ability to change your Mayhem level via your ECHO device.

The next free season event, Revenge of Cartels, will also arrive in April. It involves hunting down and eliminating key operatives around the galaxy.

"Maurice has run afoul of some space-faring gangs, and the best way to protect him is taking the fight directly to the Cartel thugs who want his hide. You’ll have to eliminate key operatives stationed around the galaxy so Maurice can open a portal to a new hideout area where the Cartel has set up shop. The enemies you’ll encounter on the other side of the portal will change based on which division of the Cartel you’re up against."

The third and final free content update mentioned in the Spring roadmap is Guardian Takedown, coming in May. Again, details were limited but it will be themed around the Guardians, mysterious figures of Eridian origin.
