Follow this guide to unlock Professor Oak and his partner, the mythical Pokémon Mew, as playable characters in Pokémon Masters.

In more than 20 years worth of games, fans have never been able to play as Professor Oak, the former competitive Trainer turned research professor. For as long as we’ve known Professor Oak, he’s cared for and studied hundreds of Pokémon while assisting players on their many adventures. That changed this week thanks to a new update in Pokémon Masters, the real-time strategy battling game for mobile devices.

As part the game’s six-month anniversary celebration, DeNA, in partnership with The Pokémon Company, has finally make Professor Oak a playable character, able to join the battle as a Pokémon Trainer.  The announcement was accompanied by a trailer that celebrates Professor Oak’s longevity in the series, dating all the way back to his first appearance in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue.

How to unlock Profressor Oak and Mew

Anyone who logs into the game and completes the tutorial before March 15 at 10:59 p.m. PT will receive Professor Oak and his partner, the mythical Pokémon Mew, as playable characters. You’ll have to sit through a cutscene, but after that Professor Oak will be automatically added to your list of available Pokémon trainers to take into battle.

Complete the “Professor Oak & Mew Special Missions”

More from Game Guides

Once you obtain Professor Oak and Mew, you can complete the batch of “Professor Oak & Mew Special Missions,” which become available after you complete Chapter 2 of the Main Story.

There are a total of 95 missions available. Completing these special event missions will reward you with exclusive items that can be used to increase the power and strength of Professor Oak and Mew.

However, these missions are only available through March 15. After that, the missions will disappear and you’ll need to increase his power by completing other events and using items earned in the game.

Sync Pair Story

In addition to having Profressor Oak join your team, you can experience his “Sync Pair Story.”  This in-game story event will reveal how Professor Oak met the mythical Pokémon Mew and how they formed a sync pair.
