Skellboy and a very late release of Alien: Isolation highlight the Nintendo Switch’s December schedule for new game releases.

It’s been a pretty big year for the Nintendo Switch in terms of new game releases. Heck, the last few weeks alone saw some of the system’s biggest exclusives release in Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. And, of course, there’s been plenty of re-releases for games that had previously been available on Xbox and PlayStation, but now take advantage of the Switch’s portability.

Things are finally slowing down for the Switch in December, which is to be expected. Even the Xbox One and PS4 are light next month when it comes to new releases. Most notably, Skellboy and Alien: Isolation, highlight an otherwise dead month.

Skellboy is probably the more original and intriguing of the two. It’s a colorful indie game in which you travel across Cubold as a resurrected skeletal body, capable of swapping out body parts and acquiring new abilities. Here’s the brief overview:

"Life was peaceful in the Cubold Kingdom until the king’s evil court magician got dumped by the princess. With his heart broken and his rage fueled, he called upon the evil spirits to resurrect the dead and the kingdom’s long forgotten monstrosities."

Skellboy looks a mix of action-adventure, platforming and role-playing. I, personally, love the art style and it seems to have that old-school tone and charm that we had with games from the early 90s/00s. It’s a simple, straightforward premise with a unique upgrade mechanic that could lead to some variety in gameplay.

The other big release for December is Alien: Isolation, 2014’s survival-horror based on the iconic Alien film franchise. Despite being a huge fan of the franchise, I didn’t particularly love this game. While I thought Creative Assembly did an amazing job recreating the look and tone of the movies, I thought the gameplay was brutally unforgiving and downright frustrating at times. I haven’t played it in a while so maybe they’ve toned down the difficulty a bit since then.
