#16. Lost Sphear (Nintendo Switch, PS4, PC)

What if the world was vanishing around you? Landmarks, towns, even people? That’s the premise of Lost Sphear, the newest game from Square Enix’s Tokyo RPG Factory team. Their first effort, I am Setsuna, was somewhat reminiscent of the all-time RPG classic Chrono Trigger, and Lost Sphear wants to continue that trend. The combat is an updated version of the “Active Time Battle” system seen in Chrono Trigger and I am Setsuna with some additional twists such as having limited use of powerful mech suits both in and out of battle. Another potentially clever twist to the gameplay is that restoring the world is a system in the game. You recover memories of things and use that to restore them in order to get to towns, proceed in dungeons, etc. It certainly gives Lost Sphear a unique hook that will help set it apart from other RPGs.

Lost Sphear is also one of the few games on this list that people can get some idea of what the game is like for themselves, as a demo has been out for a little while now. Hopefully Lost Sphear, which is one of the earliest 2018 RPG titles as its coming out in less than two weeks (January 23rd), is one RPG fans can really dig into for a good spell.
