#1.  Final Fantasy IX

Actually well above a game like Chrono Cross, my personal favorite entry in the venerable Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy IX really deserves a full-fledged makeover. The story and characters are amazing, and the whole game is kind of a nice step back after the showiness in the last two entries that actually had a lot of problems once you got past what was at the time a really impressive graphical showcase. Final Fantasy IX was well, more fun than its PlayStation One predecessors in just about every aspect from story to characters to the battle system. And nothing was a supremely drastic change, just a good focus on what worked in past titles and updating things that didn’t.

Unfortunately, the game was also the worst-selling in the franchise of the PlayStation One era. To say it tanked was a stretch, but when it sold less than the last two entries, that’s not much reason for Square Enix to consider it the direction the series should’ve headed. But I there’s a pretty reasonable theory that it suffered from coming out on the PlayStation One months after the PlayStation 2 had launched and theoretically, many gamers had already moved on to the next generation. So arguably the best entry in the Final Fantasy franchise, which the creator of the series himself recently named as his favorite game in the series, really did not get a fair shake. A proper HD release with all the bells and whistles given to Final Fantasy XII is clearly in order here. Square Enix certainly seems to be on board with remaking most of their classic RPGs at some point, so hopefully, Final Fantasy IX will get its turn sooner rather than later.

And that’s the list of ten PlayStation One games that deserve an HD remaster. Granted, if you still have a PlayStation 3 or a Vita, many of the games on this list are available as PSN games, so that is one way to experience them. However, none of these are available on the PS4 or most other platforms so hopefully, that will be remedied soon and I’d much rather it be a proper HD remaster than the game just dumped on a digital storefront as it originally was yet again. Are there any classic PlayStation One games you are dying to see get a remaster that wasn’t on this list? Be sure to include them in the comments!
