I guess my adventures have always leaned to the Hunter S. Thompson style of "gonzo" journalism. In college one of my professors warned me about what he saw as a need to involve myself in the stories. Shortly after, I went to cover my school's homecoming basketball game and got crowned Homecoming King. Dr. Nolan could only shake his head.

Not that long ago I wrote a story about the College Football 25 Heisman House tournament. I consider myself reasonably good at the game, so I entered some of the tournament qualifiers on PlayStation 5. After some grinding to level my Ultimate Team up and a few tries, I qualified for the invite only round.

I received my official invitation this week, right after celebrating my 50th birthday. I'm well aware I'm closer to the end of both my writing and gaming careers than the beginning, so this feels really good. I didn't get the ages of any of my opponents, but I'm betting I'm older than quite a few of them.

It's one of the things I love about football games. Reflexes still matter, but the mind matters at least as much. What adjustments do you make after getting burned for a 50-yard bomb? What playbook gives you the best chance in a wide field? Football is more chess match than quick twitch reflexes, at least that's what I believe. So far my evidence is pretty good.

This isn't just my victory lap. This is also where I tell you there's only one place you'll be able to get tips and guides from a Heisman House qualifier, and you're reading it right now. With apologies to Dr. Nolan, I plan to stay involved in this story for at least another couple of rounds.
