A Minecraft Movie is the highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far, passing $550 million in two weekends at the box office. Another movie or two is guaranteed at this point. I know it's tradition for a kids' movie to add a few jokes to keep the adults awake. But Minecraft pushes this envelope way farther than you'd expect a film presumably for pre-teens to do.
The jokes traditionally slipped into these types movies are usually clever wordplays that will slip right past any kids, who are waiting for Jack Black to do something goofy. Dreamworks' Shrek films (at least the early ones) do this pretty well. We learn Pinnochio is wearing women's underwear, and that he naturally lies about it. We don't learn much more, nor do we need to.
But A Minecraft Movie throws in some visual gags that aren't subtle at all.
The most egregious offender is a bit in which stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa have to make a "man sandwich" to get through a hole in a mountain. They get into what basically resembles a sexual position and even complain that there can't be any space in between the two of them for the maneuver to work.
There's even a take of one of the actors grabbing the other's butt. I used to do improv for an adult audience, and we wouldn't have been allowed to do a single one of these jokes. It's not a double entendre if the sexual content is blatantly obvious. I'm having a hard time describing the scene in the parameters of good taste set here at App Trigger, and again, this is for kids, right?
There's also a romantic subplot starring Jennifer Coolidge, summoning the spirit of Stifler's Mom as usual, and one of the Minecraft villagers. Again, this is a kid's movie. There's a lot of time spent on a romance between two minor characters, although I will say the payoff at the end is pretty dang funny.
I'm fully aware nothing I say here will slow down the Minecraft movie money train. But I'm sure I'm not the only parent a little shocked by some of those jokes. Is Dan Schneider hiding out on the writing team?
