Despite having pulled back on video games in the past couple of years and some of the drama with Larian Studios, Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast has recently announced a new Dungeons and Dragons video game.
The trailer had its first viewing at the Gaming Awards this month to a set of mixed reviews as little of what the actual gameplay looks like was revealed. People remain uncertain and hesitant to become excited about this game, but there may be good reason to.
Now why are people hesitant? Well, as stated, much of the gameplay wasn't revealed and little details have been released about what the game will be like. The third-person gameplay will focus on a warrior warlock known as Kaatari, but beyond that, not too much is known yet,
Similarly, centering a game around the warlock class from the fifth edition of Dungeons and Dragons (or, really, the 2025 updated version of 5e) is something a lot of the audience remains unsure about. Many people have commented on the limited spell slots of the warlock class, and that is a valid concern, though Wizards has commented that there will be a balance between magic and melee uses in the game, calling it a combination "for a combat experience that is both tactical and visceral" on the official Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons page.
Other people, likewise, have commented on the trailer's use of TOOL's Forty Six & 2 rather than what the actual trailer presents of the game. Of course, getting the liscence for such a song in combination with some pretty good visuals can be quite exciting.
Amongst the trailer, there are an array of hints and references to the game, giving the audience room to speculate and theorize about what most of the game entail. With the prominent featuring of raven feathers, some people are guessing that the warlock patron of the game may be the Matron of Ravens, the goddess of Death in D&D. On the other hand, smaller features of other potential patrons are hinted at as well, so there may be different routes of choice within the game instead of a more concrete storyline.
The greenlighting of this specific game when there has been supposed cancellations of different WotC games means that there is a certain amount of confidence in this game, and while, perhaps, some of the audience do not hold the same belief, Warlock will be a game to watch for in the future.
