During the Sept. 24 Sony: State of Play, four years after being announced and a huge data leak that pushed the game back, The Wolverine by Insomniac Games has an official release window, along with a gameplay trailer.
In this trailer, fans got to see the iconic X-Man in all his beautifully violent glory, being played by Liam McIntyre, who is attacking what seems to be The Reavers.
The Reavers are a group of cyborgs who made their first appearance inUncanny X-Men, Issue.229, in May 1988.
You may be familiar with them as the bad guys who were hunting down Wolverine and X-23 in the 2017 Marvel film, Logan.
We see an up-close shot of three Reavers getting killed before the third is ripped in half, and we see the long-awaited first look at Wolverine.
After the studio logo’s pop-up, we see a shot of Logan going into a bar called “Princess”.
Now, the Princess is a bar in the comics that is located in the mutant country of Madripoor, which was modelled after Singapore.
Madripoor made its comics debut in New Mutants issue.32, in October 1983.
In Madripoor, the bar is situated in the city's Lowtown district, a crime-ridden area where many of the city's impoverished citizens reside.
Madripoor has shown up in The MCU’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the country is also synonymous with Wolverine, as he frequently travels there.
We get a shot of a plane flying through a snowy mountainscape, and I’m assuming this is Canada, as later on in the trailer, we will get confirmation that this game will take place in Canada.
Wolverine jumps from a shipping container and kills a few more Reavers, showing off the gore fans have been clamouring for in a Wolverine game, and it shows the first look of Logan’s Iconic yellow and blue X-Men suit.
It’s a similar style to the one Hugh Jackman wore in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Next, we see Logan on a bike trailing a heavily armoured convoy, and the highway sign says “Squamish”, which is a municipality in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, which confirms my assumption that one of the locations is in Canada.
Next, we see a few scenes of Logan in combat action in Madripoor, the snowy mountains of Canada.
It seems like we will be exploring Madripoor a lot in this game, which is great to see, as this is the first time we will experience Madripoor in a different medium.
The next scene is Logan fighting in what looks like Hightown in Madripoor, the western area of the country.
Next, we see our first look at one of the big bad guys of this game, Omega Red.
He made his comic book debut in January 1991, in X-Men (Vol 2) issue.4.
Then we get a nice close-up shot of Logan’s claws coming out of his fists.
Reavers are approaching him, and he clings onto the snow as we see the first up close look of Wolverine’s healing factor, and we see his adamantium skull slowly be filled in my skin before he goes and fights a giant Reaver.
We get some more action scenes before we get our first look at Mystique, another Iconic X-Men character, who poses as a Reaver and sneaks up to kill them in gory fashion.
Most fans know her from the 20th Century Fox, X-Men films, but Mystique made her comic book debut, NOT in an X-Men comic but in Ms.Marvel issue.18 in March. 17, 1978, who at the time went by her real name, Raven Darkholme.
Her first appearance in an X-Men Comic was in Uncanny X-Men issue.141 in Jan 1981, during the iconic Days of Future Past storyline.
We would get a bit more action scenes while Logan is declaring that he isn’t a hero.
Before ending with an up-close shot of his fist in front of his face, where he says, “I’m Wolverine”, and then the title pops up.
Afterwards, we would get one more shot, where we see Wolverine looking up at a Sentinel, an iconic enemy of the X-Men, that looks like it is powering up to blast Wolverine before the trailer ends.
The Sentinels were created by a Military Intelligence operative named Dr. Bolivar Trask to eliminate mutants in Uncanny X-Men, Issue.14, in November 1965.
With all the X-Men references and enemies used, I am expecting to see more X-Men be mentioned in the game or even make a cameo.
I am gonna take a wild guess and say that at the end of the game, in a post-credit scene, we see the X-Men reaching out to Logan.
I am really excited for this game, and I cannot wait for next year's release, and hopefully, we get to see some gameplay and a part of the story in between that time.
Marvel’s Wolverine, by Insomniac Games, is set to release in Fall 2026.
