Summer Game Fest 2025: Resident Evil Requiem is ready to scare us

Resident Evil 9 Director Jun Takeuchi played us excellently, seemingly hinting that Capcom had nothing new to show regarding the franchise's latest installment. Then, minutes later, they gave us this trailer. In fairness, he did say more was coming in "the blink of an eye." But in a world in which everybody tells us we'll know more about the next big game "soon," his tease had what I think was the intended effect.

These games are about suspense, after all. We always knew another game in the now 30-year-old survival horror franchise was coming, but Capcom confirmed it was working on a new installment at 2024's Capcom Next Summer 2024 livestream.

We didn't learn exactly where this game goes on RE's timeline, but it looks as if Raccoon City has been destroyed. I have to say, since the pandemic happened, RE's story about mysterious diseases affecting people hits way, way different.

The series has had some tonal shifts recently, with games such as Resident Evil 6 being more action-heavy. Our hero here is a data analyst, not a member of STARS, so it looks like this one will be more stealth and exploration-heavy.

Horror games are as popular as they have ever been, with games such as Dead By Daylight and Phasmophobia earning huge fan followings. RE crawled through cramped hallways so these other games could run, and I can't wait to see with the masters of this genre have cooked up next.

Resident Evil: Requiem arrives Feb. 27, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
