There were some pretty obvious hints in the past few days, but I didn't dare to hope. Sony's State of Play confirmed the rumors, we're getting a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics September 30. This was the first strategy RPG I ever played, starting a lifelong obsession with them.
After the recent Final Fantasy-themed Magic: The Gathering set didn't dip into the world of Ivalice, I considered it par for the FF Tactics-denying course. While we've seen all manner of remasters, remakes, sequels and redos of games such as Final Fantasy 7. Tactics fans have gone without until now.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will feature two versions of the game. An enhanced version will have fully-voiced dialogue, graphical improvements and an updated "Squire" difficulty level.
The classic version will keep the appearance of the 1997 original, but will add an auto-save. I'm mad it took this long, but happy they're finally doing it. This made the State of Play for me. I had never played a game quite like FF Tactics before in 1997, it opened up a whole new genre for me. To this day if it has squares, grids, or any turn-based tactics, I am all the way in.
It's probably weird to walk away from a show displaying so many new games being the most excited about a remaster. But this title is one I've been waiting to replay for decades now. A lot of you will be playing this game for the first time, and I envy you a little bit.
