Dominque "SonicFox'" McClean's generational run in fighting games continued this past weekend at the Texas Showdown series of tournaments in Houston. They defeated Dyloch 2-0 in the Grand Finals to take down a 150-player Mortal Kombat 1 event. They pretended to throw a chair, poking fun at Dyloch's now infamous celebration in which he hurled a chair and broke stage lighting, causing some $3000 in damage.
This matchup pitted the CEO 2024 MK1 champ Dyloch against the legendary SonicFox, perhaps the greatest competitive MK player of all-time. Dyloch encountered a common problem against SonicFox. They are almost always playing from the winners' bracket. You might beat them a couple of times, but six wins needed to reset and take the bracket? It usually does not happen.
As commentator Tento noted, there are a few players that can make SonicFox bleed, but almost none that can kill them.
SonicFox isn't just one of the best fighting game players in the world. They are gay, nonbinary, and a furry. always at the forefront of the debate in a community that isn't always the most welcoming.
"I do this for the queers. I do this for the furries. I do this for the minorities," SonicFox said at the postgame press conference at EVO 2024 after notching their seventh EVO championship in six different game franchises. "Just apply yourself, be yourself and you can overcome anything, whatever life throws at you. We are here together. I do this for you guys."
And right now, they're doing it better than anyone in the business.
