Till now, Runway was known for bringing its AI capabilities to Hollywood, but with the recent announcement, the 3 billion dollar start-up is setting its sights on the gaming Industry.
This week Runway announced that their new tool, Game Worlds, will let its users create working video games using only text-based prompts, and this service is about to be dropped as early as next week.
Generative AI is already widely used in the gaming industry, both by small devs and big-budget studios. But this will be the first time a gaming model is made available specifically to create video games via text-based prompts. As per the AI usage, we can already see it being implemented in various titles like the latest Call of Duty: Black Ops to reviving old games like Quake. AI has its pros, if used within its limits, but it can also impact the work culture of various humans.
However, don't expect to make AAA-type games right at the start of this new service. At first, the tool will only allow its users to create simple text-based movements accompanied by images that are provided by the users. But by the end of the year, it is expected to create more games with more details.
Why AI is a serious concern for the industry
There are multiple reasons to take this AI concern seriously for the gaming industry. These AI tools are already implemented in various Hollywood projects like movies and TV shows. From Oscar-winning comedy drama Everything Everywhere All At Once to Amazon Prime Series House of David, AI has been used intensely in these world-class projects. Although the usage of AI can speed up the process and cut down expenditure, in the long run, it will surely lack the creativity that the human brain is full of.
In the recent interview, the company's CEO announced that Runaway is already in-talks with some big studios to implement their new AI tools and dataset for creating future titles maybe.
He even said
"If we can help a studio make a movie 40% faster, then we are probably gonna be able to help developers of games make games faster"CEO, Cristobal Valenzuela
Although AI usage in the gaming industry is still limited to designing characters and not just creating a new game with a prompt, it's still a clear threat if people do not abide by the laws or limit the usage .
