Rainbow Six Siege hacking scandal is the most Ubisoft end to 2025 imaginable

At this point, I just imagine Ubisoft's executive board as various characters from The Office. Actually, maybe they're all Michael Scott. The chaos that has surrounded this company over the past couple of years will be studied by archeologists, and stockholders. The stockholders will get to it first. Unlike a lot of the problems surrounding the publisher this is not self-inflicted, at least not totally. Some of the biggest companies in the world including Sony, have had hacker problems.

That said, this is the first time in my long career I remember any hackers turning multiple people into in-game billionaires, or banning fake accounts and replacing the user names with the lyrics to Michael Jackson's hit "Billie Jean."

Ubisoft says it could take as much as two weeks to sort all this out.

"A rollback is currently ongoing, and afterwards, extensive quality control tests will be executed to ensure the integrity of accounts and effectiveness of changes," it said on X. "The team is focused on getting players back into the game as quickly as possible.

"Please know that this matter is being handled with extreme care and therefore, timing cannot be guaranteed. We will provide another update as soon as we know more. Thank you all for your patience and understanding as we continue to tackle this."

Ubisoft may have all the technical things sorted out, but trust takes a long time to repair. Sure, in this case, the hackers did some things players may benefit from. Some people take joy in unlocking things. Content creators' literal job often includes telling players the most efficient way to grind for things. They won't be happy, and they are the game's most enthusiastic cheerleaders.

Rainbow Six Siege is a really fun game, but now every time you login you will question the safety of any details you've given to Ubisoft.
