We got the briefest of teaser trailers for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie during the last Nintendo Direct. Now a cinema chain may have accidentally spoiled some of the characters we'll be seeing in the likely box office smash.
Cinepolis, a Mexico-based chain, has posted a description of the Super Mario Galaxy movie saying "New threats, old rivalries, and a battle that reaches the stars. Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi join forces against Wario and Bowser Jr.”
A post credit scene in the Super Mario Bros. movie teased Yoshi, so that checks out. Bowser Jr. appears in the Galaxy games, so that makes sense. Wario's a bit of a surprise, but none of this is confirmed yet.
This will be the first movie since Nintendo's clarification that Mario and Peach are just good friends, despite the head canon we've all had about them for four decades now. Hollywood efforts generally ship romantic pairings because they know the audience does.
The first Mario movie already shifted the narrative of Peach being a princess that needs saving. When Mario arrives in the Mushroom Kingdom, it's Peach who shows him the lay of the land. The movie even suggests the Mario Bros. (gasp) might not be as good at plumbing as we've been led to believe. Or at least, not very financially successful at it.
These movies are tasked with delivering a narrative strong enough to hold up a two-hour movie, something the games don't have to bother with. All we need to know to invest in the latest Mario adventure is that Peach has been kidnapped again.
