Netflix made a pair of exciting announcements regarding The Witcher series this week. The first is that Season 4 of the show is now in production.

The second is that The Witcher has also been picked up for a fifth season, which will also serve as the show's final one. Season 5 is being shot back-to-back with the fourth season.

Netflix's The Witcher series is an adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, although the millions who have played the games have also enjoyed the series.

A medieval dark fantasy, The Witcher follows the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, a brooding professional monster hunter for hire, as navigates a world in which people often prove more wicked than beasts.

Season 4 will be a big departure from the first three seasons as Liam Hemsworth is replacing Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. Neither Cavill nor the show's creators offered an official reason, although the actor later revealed that he struggled to find a "balance between the showrunners' vision and my love for the books."

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill said in a statement back in October 2022, when it was revealed that he would be stepping awayfrom the role. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him — enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

“As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia,” Liam said in a statement. “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

The fourth and fifth seasons of The Witcher will cover the three remaining books in Sapkowski's series: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.

“It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,” creator and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told Netflix. “We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”

In addition to Liam Hemsworth now portraying Geralt, the series stars Freya Allan as Ciri, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, and Mahesh Jadu as the treacherous mage Vilgefortz. It was also revealed that actor Laurence Fishburne is joining the cast as Regis, a world-wise barber-surgeon with a mysterious past.

Netflix has not yet announced when Season 4 of The Witcher will premiere.
